Become a Horticulture Volunteer at The Battery
March through mid-November, Orientations begin March 21
Horticulture Volunteers, together with our gardeners, plant, weed, cut back plants, prune, rake, and perform all other tasks required to maintain The Battery’s beautiful perennial gardens. Regular Volunteer Hours are held Tuesday and Thursday mornings from March through mid-November with limited shifts on Saturday mornings. Occasionally, there will be volunteer opportunities outside of Regular Volunteer Hours. These may include farm projects in Battery Urban Farm’s vegetable and forest gardens or preparing for special events in the park. Please indicate your interest in being contacted for these opportunities on your registration form
If you have a group of individuals or are a corporate group that would like to volunteer, please visit our Group Volunteering page.
The Battery Core Group: The Battery Conservancy relies on dedicated community members who volunteer on a regular basis. The Battery Core Group members are qualified to volunteer outside Regular Volunteer Hours, earn service-based rewards, invitations to special events and activities, and receive advanced training in various horticultural skills.
- Complete a minimum of eight (8) 2.5 hour shifts during the calendar year. These do not need to be consecutive shifts.
- Learn the bed numbers throughout the park.
- Show progress towards learning the plants throughout the park.
Orientation: All volunteers are required to attend an orientation session before their first volunteer shift. This is a 30 – 45 minute session taking place before Regular Volunteer Hours on a Tuesday or Thursday. Orientation shifts are available every other week mid-March through September. Once an orientation shift has been completed, volunteers will be free to sign up for shifts during any Tuesday and/or Thursday Regular Volunteer Hours.
Help our visitors get to know the park as a Greeter at The Battery
March through mid-November
Greeters are stationed at an information table from 10:00am to 1:00pm on select weekdays and Saturdays from March through mid-November. Greeters answer any questions visitors might have about way-finding, basic park information, and The Battery Conservancy. Additionally, Greeters record simple data regarding park visitors. This is a great way to engage with fellow New Yorkers and learn about visitors from all over the world!
Greeters who have volunteered on a regular basis are invited to participate in additional training to become a Battery Tour Guide.
Sign-Up: To sign up as a Greeter, please fill out our volunteer registration form. Once your registration is approved (1– 2 business days), you will be able to select a training session on the calendar. Volunteers must be 15 or over. Volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver on their behalf.
Greeter Training: All Greeters are required to attend a training session before their first Greeter shift. This is a 60 – 90 minute session scheduled during business hours on a monthly basis. Once a training session has been completed, volunteers will be free to sign up for any Greeter shifts during the season.

This includes Workshops at The Battery, Summer Trivia Nights, our annual Gala and Luncheon, and The Battery Fair!
