Located at the northeastern portion of The Battery – accessible via both State Street and South Street – the redesigned PlaySpace will welcome Lower Manhattan families to the park and serve as a model worldwide for the innovative integration of water management in playgrounds.
The Battery Conservancy believes resilient design can protect our city against natural disaster and provide children a unique play experience. A raised sea wall will give kids a chance to climb – while joining with a larger system of storm surge barriers throughout the park. Rain gardens will connect children to the weather and cleanse storm water before it enters the river. Other play elements will include climbing nets, a slide mountain, and a puppet theater, which will feature formal performances as well as serving as a stage for children’s own improvisations.
Designed by BKSK Architects and Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects, the Battery PlaySpace will leverage its location in a Zone 1 flood zone to cultivate the next generation of environmental stewards. Coming soon! Construction to start in late 2016.
