The Playground Today
Located at the southern terminus of the Battery’s State Street perimeter, the current playground is unwelcoming, with outdated play equipment and inconvenient entrances. The Conservancy will use imaginative, interpretative, art–based design, combined with inventive water features, to transform the playground into a sought after amenity for Downtown’s residents and visitors.
In May 2006, world–renowned architect Frank Gehry made a visit to the Battery. He was drawn to the park because of the Conservancy’s commitment to design excellence and our ability to work with the Parks Department to build without compromising the design intent. One year later, Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Benepe announced that Frank Gehry would give the City of New York the gift of a playspace design at the Battery.
“It is fitting that the Battery, the birthplace of New York, will be home to another first”, said Commissioner Benepe. “Frank Gehry’s newest creation will be a truly innovative play experience for New Yorkers and visitors alike, for the young and the young–at–heart.”
The Battery Conservancy and Community Board #1 are forming a Family Advisory Group for the Playspace. For more details, contact The Battery Conservancy at (212) 344-3491 ext.10
