The Battery Seawall Gallery

The Battery Conservancy welcomes you to walk the prow of Manhattan with this guide and experience the RIVER THAT FLOWS TWO WAYS. The Conservancy was created to revitalize the historic Battery and to instill civic pride in its landscape — the birthplace of New York.

To this end, the Conservancy commissioned a unique public art installation by Wopo Holup, a New York artist. Her drawings, presented in this guide, were the first step in developing 37 cast–iron sculptural panels. They were fabricated by the talented artisans of JohnsonAtelier and installed in the seawall railing overlooking New York Harbor in 2000.

RIVER THAN FLOWS TWO WAYS is divided by bands of bronze representing the river — above the water line is the human history of The Battery, and below is the ecological story of the Hudson River from the glacial era to today. Tony Hiss, award winning author, wrote the accompanying text.
