The Battery Council

The Battery is New York City’s past, present and future. It is the vibrant gathering space for an emerging Lower Manhattan and one of the nation’s most visited historic sites.

For over a decade the Battery Conservancy has designed, constructed and now maintains the park’s waterfront landscape with private and public support.

By 2010 the Conservancy will complete the rebuilding of this unique waterfront at the tip of Manhattan.

Be a part of it, Join the Battery Council TODAY!

The Battery Council provides sustaining support to the Battery’s 25 acres and to the rebirth of Castle Clinton National Monument. Through your annual donation you will ensure the park continues to be designed and maintained to high standards, and revitalized with cultural programs.

To Date, we have:

    • Raised over $73 million in private and public funds to implement the park’s Master Plan

    • Planted 70,000 sq. ft. of perennial gardens designed by the world renowned Dutch plantsman Piet Oudolf

    • Constructed two kiosks serving natural foods and beverages

    • Built a spiral play fountain in the Bosque

    • Reconstructed two waterfront promenades

    • Installed River that Flows Two Ways, public art within the seawall railing

    • Built the Battery Labyrinth, a space for contemplation

    • Launched CastleGarden.org, a free website of 10 million records from Castle Garden Immigration Center (1855-1890)

    • Created Walls within Walls, an exhibition at Castle Clinton of the mid-18th century Battery sea walls

With your help we will:

    • Construct SeaGlass, Carousel at the Battery—the first carousel Downtown

    • Build the Battery Playspace, a new one-acre playground

    • Create the Battery Bikeway to connect Hudson River Park to the East River Esplanade

    • Expand the Battery Lawn to seven acres

    • Design the two-acre Town Green for relaxation and live performances

    • Redesign Peter Minuit Plaza, located in front of the Staten Island Ferry

    • Launch the stunning adaptive reuse of Castle Clinton to establish the site as a centerpiece for New York’s Downtown community and cultural life
