Opened to the public in 2017, The Battery Woodland is a beautiful four-acre lawn shaded by 82 mature trees. It is a sought-after destination for picnicking, relaxing, reading or taking a yoga class. Adjacent to The Battery Urban Farm, the Woodland serves as an outdoor classroom for neighborhood schools.
Hosting a number of native New York trees, including Pin Oak (Quercus palustris), Willow Oak (Quercus phellos), Red Oak (Quercus rubra), Sweet Gum (Liquidambar styraciflua) and Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), the Woodland provides important habitat for New York’s local and migrating birds.
The Battery Woodland today creates much-needed quiet shade for New York City’s residents, workers, and visitors. As with all landscape areas of The Battery, the Conservancy maintains the Woodland free of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
A waterfront restaurant and two farm-to-table outdoor garden cafes offer sweeping panoramic views of New York Harbor and Lady Liberty.
