Performance & Play

Playscape Performs will take place this year on Sundays between May and October in the ShowBox Theater in Battery Playscape! We look forward to welcoming you back for music, dance, puppetry and more.

Shows are at 10:30am and 12:30pm.

May

May 3rd – NYC Kids Project

Interactive experiences using puppets, storytelling, and facilitated dialogue to help children develop critical social-emotional skills, most notably empathy and social awareness.

May 10th – Show Up Kids!

This fresh twist on the traditional kids’ show blasts off when the hapless host gets the audience to help write, design & direct a comedy show on the spot. What could possibly go wrong?

May 17th – Teatro Sea

Teatro SEA is the premiere Bilingual Arts-in-Education Organization and Latino Children’s Theatre in the United States. SEA has created and produced a combination of educational theatre productions and art workshops/programs specifically designed to examine, challenge and create possible solutions for current educational, social and community issues.

May 24th – Puppetsberg

Interactive, culturally relevant puppet shows for 4mos-4yrs. Shows are 45 minutes long and involve dancing, instruments, dress-up “photo-ops,” and bubble time (!) followed by a different puppet story each week.

May 31st – Sova Dance & Puppetry

“Marvelous Metamorphoses” unravels to present bizarre and beautiful transformations in our world like caterpillar to butterfly, polliwog to frog, and more!  In this outdoor performance we dance & sing our way through these cycles celebrating them for our sustained joy and ecological health on this planet.

June

June 7th – Bill Gordh

Bill Gordh is an award-winning Banjo-playing storyteller, author, educator, early childhood and elementary literacy specialist and consultant.

June 14th – NYC Kids Project

June 21st – Wonderspark Puppets

WonderSpark Puppets is a New York City based puppet theater company led by Chad Williams and Z Briggs. The company’s mission is to spread joy, spark imagination and share laughter through high quality puppet performances.

June 28th – Loco 7

Loco7 Dance Puppet Theatre Company develops and promotes creative productions of theatre, puppetry, dance, visual arts, and music. They aim to be a collective where artistic expression and community meet, providing an environment of creative freedom for artists to explore and develop their artistic practice, and hone their skills. They deal with themes such as North and South American Culture and History, the Immigrants’ experience, and New York City Urban Life.

July

July 12th – Chinese Theatre Works

Each year, Chinese Theatre Works celebrates the Lunar New Year season with an original “budaixi” traditional Chinese glove-puppetry production that features the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac. This year’s show stars the Snake, who presides over a jolly selection of wild puppet skits, dances, popular songs, and well-known Chinese sayings that celebrate the wit and wisdom of the zodiac animals.

July 26th – Puppetsburg

September

September 6th – Wonderspark Puppets

September 13th – Parallel Exit

Parallel Exit creates compelling stories that are family-friendly, cultivating art that speaks to a culturally boundless audience of any age.

September 27th – Paper Heart Puppets

Four original stories, brought to life using nothing but cardboard and the power of your imagination. With help from the audience, puppeteer Brad Shur transforms simple cardboard shapes into elaborate puppet characters, then brings them to life right before your eyes.
